HOW TO PICK & STYLE JOGGERS
DISCOVER A MORE STYLISH ALTERNATIVE TO LEGGINGS AND TRACKSUIT BOTTOMS
Joggers are one of my favourite staples in a smart casual wardrobe for 2 reasons:
- you can look stylish without compromising on comfort
- you can look effortlessly smart without feeling overdressed
Check out my tips below on what to pay attention to when looking for a pair of joggers and if you don’t own a pair yet, definitely put them on your shopping list!
fit
Here are the key elements of joggers that set them apart from other trousers:
- elasticated waist (often with a drawstring). This is what makes them so comfortable! They are a great option for anyone who suffers from bloating or fluctuates in weight/size around the tummy area.
- can have elasticated cuffs at the bottom but this is a feature that makes them look casual. Uncuffed joggers look a lot smarter (what style to choose will depend on what you want to do with joggers and how you want to style them).
- the best length for joggers is above the ankle (except the sporty ones, they are fine draping over the ankle).
- the fit is usually relaxed. Overly fitted or oversized joggers are trendy pieces and will have less versatility to them.
- fabric can be stretchy and non-stretchy. Stretchy materials (as well as sweatshirt material) make joggers very casual while non-stretchy give them a tailored feel and those joggers are often referred to as jogging trousers or jogger-fit trousers.
- joggers work well for all body shapes.
FABRIC & STYLE
STRETCHY JOGGERS
Stretchy fabrics are a great option if you want something just a little bit dressier than casual tracksuit bottoms or leggins.
(As a rule of thumb – knitted materials and in general any fabrics with a high percentage of elastane give the item a very casual feel)
If you go lighter on the colour, for example, for grey or blush + stretchy material, joggers will look like loungewear. Nothing wrong with that if that’s the purpose you are buying them for, but if you want to wear them in a smart casual way, give preference to more structured materials instead of soft stretchy textures.
Stretchy joggers work great for edgy casual looks with sweatshirts, slouchy jumpers, relaxed coats, biker jackets and trainers. Perfect option for moms of small kids or anyone who wants a cosy yet stylish look for out and about.
LINEN-BLEND JOGGERS
Linen blends are a great option if you want joggers as part of your summer wardrobe. Keep in mind that, just like stretchy fabrics, linen texture has a casual feel.
So they will work well for the weekend or holiday wardrobe. Style them with t-shirts, cotton tops, other linen pieces, fine knits and denim.
structured JOGGERS
Structutred materials give joggers a dressy feel turning them in the type of trousers that can effortlessly give you smart options as well as casual looks. This is probably the most versatile option. So if you don’t have any specific preferences for what you’d like to style your joggers with, go with the piece that will give you enough flexibility without any limitations.
Structured joggers can easily fit into your work wardrobe and be styled with heels, blazers and silky blouses.
Otherwise, style them with pieces mentioned previously for more casual options.
