NEW STYLING SOLUTIONS

In the previous Style Notes I talked about the importance of evolving your style and how looking for new styling solutions is the easiest, cheapest and, often, most efficient way of revamping your style.

I promised to help you with finding suitable options so I’ve put together a guide with super cool and easy styling hacks that will immediately jazz up your look!

The best part? A lot of them won’t cost you a penny! You have most of these components already sitting in your wardrobe, we’ll just give them a fresh spin!

Today we’ll talk about 3 super easy and quick styling tricks + one advanced level. Try experimenting with all of them because they can give you some very impressive results!

Scarves

Scarves are in the trendy spotlight at the moment, but this season we are not wearing them wrapped around the neck.

4 trendiest ways to style a scarf:

  • instead of a belt
  • draped over coats, cardigans, blazers and dressed and cinched in with a belt
  • wrapped around the handle of a bag
  • as a hair accessory (wrapped around a bun, a ponytail or as a headband)

Silky scarves are the best style to play around with for these looks. Silky materials will bring in an immediate dressy vibe to the look, even if it is just a pair of a jeans an a t-shirt.

So pull out your scarves and start experimenting!

Layered Jewellery

Delicate jewellery styled in layers and stacks has been a big styling trend for the last two years now and is not going anywhere. By the way, this is the advantage of styling trends vs fashion trends. Most fashion trends last for a season or two, while styling trends hang around for much longer. Simply because it’s not about what you wear, but HOW you wear it.

Big chunky necklaces have been on trend for quite a while, but fashion loves jumping to extremes – delicate jewellery is dominating the trends.

And the most stylish way to wear it is wearing a few pieces at the same time.

You can mix different lengths, sizes, different textures and even different metal colours. Less is more rule doesn’t apply here! So feel free to put not as many pieces as you are comfortable wearing.

The biggest advantange of this way of styling is that even with a few pieces you won’t overload the look. If you don’t want to feel like a magpie (even though this is the look!), focus on one or two types of jewellery in one outfit – necklaces and rings or necklaces and bracelets.

If you have a very simple top (let’s say, a black rollneck), wear a pair of statement earrings (another huge styling trend!) and then have fun with bracelets and rings. This will skyrocket the style stakes of the outfit and make it interesting and edgy!

Now dig out whatever you have in costume or proper jewellery and see what combinations you can come up with!

Roll Up And Tuck In

Roll up and tuck in – remember this as a styling mantra! This is the secret sauce of most streetstyle looks! It makes an outfit more pulled together but effortless and relaxed at the same time.

Here is the recipe:

  • Always pull up/roll up the sleeves where possible.

This well help to elongate the legs, restructure the silhouette and give the look an effortless vibe.

  • Roll up the jeans/trousers where possible.

This will expose the ankles (which looks very flattering) as well as make the jeans/trousers look a lot edgier.

  • Always try to tuck in the tops.

Important: you don’t need to tuck the entire top inside of your bottoms. You can just tuck in the front – put about an inch or two of the fabric behind the waistband and let the rest of the top drape around whichever way it falls. This works really well for most tops and jumpers.

If you are tucking in a shirt or a blouse, tuck it in fully first and then raise your hands above your head as high as possible. This will pull out the necessary amount of material and let the top drape nicely.

If you were wondering how streetstylers are getting away with oversized looks – you have your answer now. Rolled up sleeves or a tucked in waist is the easest way to make it work.

Go and play with your looks to see how much difference a small tweak like that can make!

Attract The Opposites

Putting together seemingly impossible-to-coordinate-together items is the advanced level of styling and I highly encourage you to spend some time on this!

You will be surprised by how many new combinations you might spot! Yes, even more than you found after the Wardrobe Recharge Challenge!

Why?

Because this is one of the methods of dressing things up and down and one of the most efficient hacks of mixing & matching.

  • You can tone down dressy pieces this way – just look at sequined skirts/trousers teamed with knitwear, tshirts and sweatshirts.
  • Vice versa – you can dress up casual pieces like sweatshirts, t-shirts, hoodies, denim jackets, etc.
  • You can create very unusual combinations by putting things with opposite vibes together – like feminine girlie lace dress and heavy lace-up boots.
  • You can get wear out of pieces that feel too dressy when teamed with other dressy pieces – for example, a floor length dress will feel eveningly with heels, but with trainers and a biker jacket will look cool and edgy. Or a black slip dress – it would be suitable for a dressy dinner when paired with heels on its own, but it gets a casual vibe when teamed with a tshirt and a denim jacket.

Look for potential combinations along these lines in your wardrobe wardrobe.

Try taking some work pieces, for instance, and seeing if you can repurpose them for the weekend. Or take some of the pieces from your occasionwear wardrobe and try to find pieces that will tone them down for more casual purposes.

Get to Practice!

The key to mastering styling is ongoing practice!

So put these hacks to good use and watch out for Part 2 tomorrow!
