Fuchsia: How to Co-ordinate

THE colour

Style Notes

FUCHSIA

If you want a colour that won’t let you go unnoticed, fuchsia will be your new best friend!

Vibrant, bold and dynamic, it will make you stand out and bring a breath of fresh air into your looks.

Unlike some other bright colours, fuchsia is very versatile – it works in summer just as well as winter and looks great in dressy pieces just as much as in casual clothes.

Keep in mind – fuchsia has quite a dressy vibe so will effortlessly dress up whatever item it comes in. If you want to keep things low-key and effortless (let’s say for your weekend wardrobe), give prefence to more casual fabrics in this colour.

On the other hand, if you want a piece that is dressy without trying too hard, fuchsia will be a great option when paired with a dressy or structured material.

Below you can see two palettes with fuchsia – one is a fresh summery one while the other one is darker and more suitable for autumn/winter.

STYLING IDEAS

I’ve put together a selection of looks below to give you a feel for a variety of combinations you can create with fuchsia.

Fuchsia works effortlessly with most light neutrals like cream, white, blush, stone and creates crisp combinations. If the pieces are in dressy fabrics, these looks will work very well for dressy occasions.

But even in casual fabrics, these combinations will have a dressier feel than same fabrics in other colours.

When paired with dark neutrals, fuchsia  gets toned down and becomes very wearable. Navy, black, grey, teal, dark purple – all of these colours will effortlessly mix & match with fuchsia.

Black is the easiest colour in dark neutrals to create dressy combinations, while grey will be the best colour to dress fuchsia down.

When it comes to co-ordinating with bright colours, fuchsia can offer lots of options.

It easily goes with blues, oranges, reds, purples, greens and yellows. But keep in mind that these are all very vibrant combinations so unless you really like bold striking ensembles, choose the second bright colour in accessories.

If you want to tone it down even more, go for these combinations in small amounts – for example, a fuchsia top inside of a neutral blazer + bright shoes/bag. That way you’ll be able to tap into these vibrant combinations without feeling overwhelmed.

Pairing fuchsia with bright colours works super well for occasionwear so if you have any pieces in your occasion wardrobe in this colour, they will easily co-ordinate with the colours in the palettes and create interesting and vibrant looks.

DECIDING IF THIS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Fuchsia can be a tricky colour to pull off for certain colourings, such as light blonde with low contrast level (blond hair + pale skin + blue eyes). But brunettes and blondes with dark eyes will be really suited to it.

If you happen to be a blonde with a low contrast level, don’t despair! Simply keep fuchsia away from your face. You can wear it in bottoms and accessories no problem!

Fuchsia will fit well into wardrobes with a lot of dark/dark + light colours and will bring a fresh, jazzed-up vibe to them.

It will also work well in wardrobes that have other bright colours, provided they are of a similar intensity.

If you have a lot of pastel colours in your summer wardrobe, fuchsia will be tricky to fit in as it is can be very overpowering on pastels. The only combination that works efforlessly among pastels is fuchsia and mint. In all other cases you might be left with limited options.

Now go have a look in your own wardrobe and see:

  • if you have fuchsia pieces – find new combinations you might not have thought of before.
  • if you don’t have anything in fuchsia – see if you have other colours featured in palettes and looks or if your dark colours could be jazzed up by fuchsia. That way you’ll know if this will be a good addition to your wardrobe.
