SPENDING MONEY ON CLOTHES VS INVESTING IT IN CLOTHES
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE AND HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING
Have you ever calculated the total worth of your wardrobe? I can guarantee you’d be shocked if you’ve seen the grand total!
Now imagine spending all that money on the wardrobe and then only wearing (read ‘getting a return on investment for’) a fraction of it.
In this post, we’ll talk about what makes a good investment when it comes to buying clothes and what is spending without having much to show for it.
WHAT IS A GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT FOR CLOTHES?
Often, when I talk about the return on investment for clothes to my clients, they get confused and assume I’m talking about being able to resell the clothes later at a profit. It’s not about the profit you make if you sell the clothes (though that’s a really good strategy to get some money back for pieces you are not using), but rather about what you get for your money.
You get a good return on investment for a garment when you wear it regularly, feel great in it and get a variety of options out of it.
When none of this is happening, it means you invested your time, effort, and money and the only return on investment you’ll be seeing is overwhelm and frustration. THIS is the key difference between spending money on clothes (read: wasting) and investing.
Most of my clients when I asked them how much money is sitting in their wardrobe couldn’t come up even with a ballpark figure. Never mind knowing what return on investment they are getting from their clothes! At least half of what I see in my clients’ wardrobes at the beginning of working together can’t even be called an investment – it’s money spent down the drain. These items are sitting in the wardrobe, taking up space, creating mental clutter, and making them feel guilty and confused every time they look at them.
I compare this to hiring an employee and letting him/her watch Netflix all day every day with no contribution to the work process, all while receiving a premium salary. Makes no sense, right?
Spending money on clothes and not wearing them, in the end, makes just as little sense. If you don’t wear what’s in your wardrobe, you’ve spent your hard-earned money on stuff that is just collecting dust and taking up space.
I really want you to process what I just said as I know many of you need this kick up their bum to stop wasting money.
Next time when you go shopping, don’t fall into your old patterns of buying without a plan. (If you don’t know where to get started with your wardrobe plan + strategy, this will help!) Make sure you clearly understand what the item will contribute to your wardrobe and how much wear you’ll get out of it!
With this one little tweak in your shopping approach, you are guaranteed to see much better results!
See for yourself and you can thank me later! 😉
